Universal negative poisson ratio of self-avoiding fixed-connectivity membranes.
We determine the Poisson ratio of self-avoiding fixed-connectivity membranes, modeled as impenetrable plaquettes, to be sigma = -0.37(6), in statistical agreement with the Poisson ratio of phantom fixed-connectivity membranes sigma = -0.32(4). Together with the equality of critical exponents, this result implies a unique universality class for fixed-connectivity membranes. Our findings thus est...
متن کاملUniversality Classes of Self-Avoiding Fixed-Connectivity Membranes
We present an analysis of extensive large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of self-avoiding fixed-connectivity membranes for sizes (number of faces) ranging from 512 to 17672 (triangular) plaquettes. Selfavoidance is implemented via impenetrable plaquettes. We simulate the impenetrable plaquette model in both three and four bulk dimensions. In both cases we find the membrane to be flat for all tem...
متن کاملSelf-avoiding Polymerized Membranes
Recent progresses in the understanding of the scaling behavior of self-avoiding flexible polymerized membranes (tethered manifolds) are reviewed (joint works with B. Duplantier and E. Guitter, and with K. Wiese). They rely on a new general renormalization group approach for a class of models with non-local singular interactions. This approach allows to prove the existence of a ǫ-expansion for t...
متن کاملUniversal behavior of crystalline membranes: Crumpling transition and Poisson ratio of the flat phase.
We revisit the universal behavior of crystalline membranes at and below the crumpling transition, which pertains to the mechanical properties of important soft and hard matter materials, such as the cytoskeleton of red blood cells or graphene. Specifically, we perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of a triangulated two-dimensional phantom network which is freely fluctuating in three-dimen...
متن کاملFolding Transitions of Self-Avoiding Membranes.
Abstract: The phase structure of self-avoiding polymerized membranes is studied by extensive Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations. Several folding transitions from the flat to a collapsed state are found. Using a suitable order parameter and finite size scaling theory, these transitions are shown to be of first order. The phase diagram in the temperature-field plane is given.
